New Year's Resolutions OR "the same 'ole thing"

Welcome to 2011! How did you wrap up the last year - with a bang or a bust? Now that we are all into the month of January, it is fitting to do that annual evaluation of last year and decide on what changes (if any) you want in your life to make this year even better. No matter what you thought about last year, this year can be even better. All it takes is a willingness TO CHANGE. Oh, such nasty words, right. Actually "changing" is something we all do quite naturally and without much thought. Each day is a new day and our own desire to survive means that we learn to adapt to our new environment and any new challenges that come our way.

Every year, we hear about setting up a "New Year's Resolution" to do this or stop that. AND every year before the first week has gone by, at least one person in the shopping line, at the office or where ever you go sounds that all familiar horn - "Well I blew that resolution". Good intentions do not always lead to good results as this so obviously shows. But, it is not the end of the world just because of a failed plan. Wait a minute - did I say"plan". To have a plan, a well thought out plan and one that takes into account possible problem areas and how to overcome them when or if they pop up is a major cause for success. Businesses strategize this way all the time and so do we in our own personal life. One only needs to think about what one does in any number of other circumstances. Take as an example your vehicle not starting (as may happen if you experience a bitter cold winter climate). So you try to get a neighbor to jump start your vehicle, call a towing company for a power boost, call a friend to get a ride, call a taxi, OR call the boss and saying that you won't be in today even though there is a major project due and a presentation in front of 30 people who are flying in from all over the country. What would you do? Of course this is a bit of a trick question since you probably would go down a list of sorts from simplest to more timely and costly solution.

Perhaps you went through the holidays wishing you had someone to share them with or maybe you had plenty of friends but not a satisfying relationship that left you feeling like it is going any place in the near future. If you are single and yet with someone who is uncommitted then it is time to get this person off the fence and look to this new year as a step toward some form of progress in the relationship - moving in together, setting a marriage date, etc. For those not having a significant other, consider where you are frequenting and decide that now is the time to start finding new places and discarding the old hang outs which offer little more than familiar yet uncaring faces.

Finding one's way in the single life is a balance between keeping one's own interests while at the same time wanting to share yourself with someone special. YET, accomplishing this is dependent on your personal willingness to seek out new opportunities in the form of friendships that may lead to deeper relationships. Trying the same ole thing that has not led anywhere probably won't lead anywhere this year either and while you are in the process of forging a strong relationship, roadblocks preventing a deeper relationship have to be overcome with sometimes alternative, different and yet to be proven measures if you truly want to be satisfied.
